Hej!
Chapter 1 Andromeda Black woke up and stared at the ceiling of her four-poster bed, the green drapes let in a small stream of light from the outside. She groaned before slowly sitting up, rubbing her eyes and yawning, she hated mornings. The sound that had woken her up outside of her drapes told her Hailey were already up and getting ready. Andromeda closed her eyes for a second bracing herself. She knew Hailey were deliberately loud to wake her up. Which meant Hailey hadn’t done her homework last night. “Andy?” She called out in a shrill tone, and Andromeda growled in response, Hailey snickered. “Always the morning person,” “Mhmph.” Andromeda rubbed her eyes with more vigour, forcing them open. “I was wondering if you knew how long the homework for charms was supposed to be?” Hailey asked innocently, “Something like eleven inches,” muttered Andromeda as she appeared from behind her drapes, “You ought to have done it yesterday when I told you.” “Well, not everyone is as ambitious as you,” Hailey frowned, Andromeda rolled her eyes at her; “You’re a Slytherin, you’re supposed to be ambitious.” Hailey shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know about that.” Andromeda stretched like a cat before standing up, “What time is it?” “Hm… ten to six.” Hailey said with an apologetic smile. “I hate you.” Andromeda growled, “I needn’t be up for another hour.” “Seeing as you’re up, you might lend me a hand with this homework?” Hailey threw her an unassuming smile, Andromeda rolled her eyes for the second time that morning, “You’re such a sly snake.” “Thanks, I thought since I’m not very ambitious, I’d settle for cunning,” Hailey winked, “Let me get dressed first though.” Andromeda added, as she pulled her dark curls out of the braid she had slept in. The curls framed her face nicely, and she gently combed through it to not make it frizzy. Andromeda did her skin-care routine and Hailey watched her impatiently, tapping her foot on the floor. It was a wonder the other girls didn’t awake. “You’re not going to do your make-up to, right?” Hailey whined, “I’m not the one who needs help with charms, am I?” Andromeda replied annoyed as she fixed herself. Hailey stood quietly, but impatiently and was very satisfied once Andromeda were done and had tied her green tie around her neck. “Hurry up. I really need to improve my grade in charms. Reckon I’m going get a T soon…” The two girls hurried up the stairs from their dormitory and sat down by a table in their common room. Andromeda albeit tiredly helped her friend with homework, refusing to let Hailey copy hers. “Letting you take credit for hours of work? – Never.” “Your such an over-achiever, Andy.” Hailey had muttered, Andromeda didn’t bother to answer, she just saw her mother’s face in front of her if she’d get anything less than O’s. She shuddered at the thought. “There, that will give you at least an acceptable, your own fault for starting the same morning its due.” Andromeda said after reading it through and slouched back in the armchair. “Breakfast isn’t until another half an hour.” Hailey said, and Andromeda groaned again. She was not a morning person. A little while later Bellatrix entered the common room, “Oh by merlin’s beard!” She made a dramatic gesture, “it’s a miracle, Andy’s up and breakfast isn’t even served!” Andromeda threw a book at Bellatrix and only missed her sister by a hair. “Hailey, what have we told you about waking Andy up before breakfast?” Bellatrix tried to look serious with her hands on her hips, but a small smile rested upon her red lips. “I’ve never regretted anything more.” Hailey snickered. Andromeda stared at them both with a hard-cold stare. Bellatrix slouched down next to her sister and gave her a hug, “Oh, come of it, Andy!” “I’ll hex you.” Andromeda hissed sourly, “Aw, someone clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.” Bellatrix continued in her baby voice and Andromeda’s eyes sparkled with anger as she pushed her sister off her, “I warn you, I will hex you into next year.” “Yeah, right.” Bellatrix smiled at her sister, and pulled up a bar of chocolate, “Here, eat it, before you kill someone.” Andromeda’s eyes grew wide with gratefulness, and as she ate the first piece she smiled for the first time that morning, “I love you Bella, have I told you lately?” “No,” Bellatrix laughed at her. “By the way, Andy, got a letter from our dear old mother…” “That’s it! Worst morning ever. I’m off to bed again, or killing myself, I haven’t quite made up my mind yet.” Andromeda rose to leave, and Hailey sighed, “Why are all Blacks such drama queens?” “If you’d been to one of our family gatherings, you would understand.” Bellatrix replied, “Wouldn’t there be new people as relatives marry though,” Hailey raised an eyebrow, “Oh no,” Andromeda shook her head, “It’s more like; Uncle Orion got married, oh great, to whom, you know your father’s cousin? – Yeah? – Yeah, her.” Hailey laughed hard, “Damn. At least all of you turned out normal,” “Mother’s a Rosier, thank merlin.” Bellatrix shuddered, “And our cousins; Sirius and Regalus got lucky.” “Weren’t you off to bed again Andromeda?” Hailey asked Andromeda who were still standing at the stairs. Andromeda looked up from her watch smiling, “Breakfast.” The other two witches looked at the time and smiled too and hurried up from the dungeons after Andromeda. They arrived in the great hall but was stopped before entering, a Hufflepuff boy had seen them and he smiled towards Andromeda whom he was working with in Herbology, “Hey Andromeda!” He smiled and were about to say something else when he noticed her cold stare at him, “Wonder where Filch has been off to.” Andromeda said coldly, “Um, I don’t know?” Ted Tonks said uncertain scratching his head, “Because he missed a spot cleaning here earlier.” “Oh?” Ted looked bewildered, “Mm, there seems to be filth in my way.” Andromeda replied and forced her way past the boy, Hailey and Bellatrix snickered behind her. “Who was that guy back there?” Bellatrix asked her sister as they sat down at the empty Slytherin table. “He’s just an annoying guy I am forced to work with in Herbology.” Andromeda said in a short tone, suggesting she was done talking about that. Bellatrix seemed interested though and opened her mouth to continue the subject when Andromeda quickly started a new topic. “How’s Narcissa coping?” Andromeda asked Bellatrix as she shovelled eggs in her mouth, “She’s doing fine, she’s been hanging around that Malfoy boy.” Bellatrix replied a tad annoyed that her sister had changed subject. “Yeah, what’s up with her?” Hailey asked, “She seemed to go from being a normal 13-year-old kid to drooling over that guy non-stop.” “Mother and aunt Walburga had a nice talk with us girls during Easter.” Bellatrix snickered at the memory, Andromeda tried to keep a straight face. “Nice? – That’s not a word often associated with your mother.” “Oh no, don’t get me wrong. It was very weird.” Bellatrix said smiling wickedly, “Mother said that a woman without a husband is like a fish without a broom,” Andromeda revealed to Hailey who burst out laughing. “But that makes absolutely no sense!” Hailey looked between the sisters, “Aren’t they obsessed with getting all of you married?” “Right, and for some reason Narcissa took it that she needed to find one now. She isn’t always the brightest… but we, we just assumed that they were implying that our father and his brother are useless.” Bellatrix said and shrugged her shoulders, “Except for breeding purposes.” Andromeda added grinning, “I’d say they’ve been pretty lousy at that too,” Bellatrix laughed, “I have said this more times than I remember during our years here, but your family are hell of weird.” Hailey chuckled, “Don’t we know!” Andromeda muttered between her chews. “You shouldn’t eat that fast!” Bellatrix commented, and Andromeda stopped for a second, “Bite me!” She replied and ate another spoonful but then she pushed the plate away from herself, “I’m done anyways, lost my appetite.” “I didn’t mean to imply that you eat too much,” Bellatrix started but Andromeda shook her head, “No, I’m really just done.” After breakfast Andromeda and Hailey had some free-time while the others ate their breakfast before they met with Roxanne and Abigail and headed for their first class of the day - double hour in charms. The three other girls talked about the next Quidditch game that were between Gryffindor and Slytherin, and Andromeda, not liking the sport at all, had time for some thoughts. She had absolutely no idea of what she was going to do after Hogwarts. With her grades she could become anything she liked, in her O.W.L exam she had scored O’s in every subject, making her the best student in her year. Only Andromeda had never really thought about what to do after school. Her family expected her to marry well, and work as little as possible but the prospect of working was rather appealing to her… “Andy, do you want to go with us on the Hogsmeade trip this Saturday?” Roxanne asked pulling Andromeda out of her trail of thoughts, she looked startled upon them, “Eh, sure. If the homework’s aren’t piling up.” The three other girls rolled their eyes at her and smirked, “It’s a date then.” They entered the classroom together and sat down in their seats, this lesson was together with the Hufflepuff’s which Andromeda hated because they were oh so annoying most of the time. Even though they were certainly better than the Gryffindors. Professor Flitwick stood on his books upon his desk and cleared his throat to gain their attention. “Good morning class! I hope you all had a wonderful breakfast, and I hope you all have the essay for me,” Flitwick flicked his wand and the parchments collected themselves and levitated to his desk. He eyed the pile for a second before turning his attention to them again. “Today we are going to be working in pairs – Oh no, I will be dividing you into them, and you will all practice the Aqua Eructo charm, not on each other of course but into the basins.” Flitwick paused for a second looking over the class, or at the class, for he wasn’t all that tall. “Can anyone tell me what the Aqua Eructo charm is? – Yes, Miss Black?” “The Aqua Eructo charm is a charm that produces water from the tip of your wand, it can be a light spout of water or a powerful jet of water, the origins of the name comes from Latin and translates to eject water.” Andromeda finished with a fixed glance at Flitwick, and he smiled, “Miss Black proving what a smart witch she is yet again, 5 points to Slytherin. Now to the pairs.” Flitwick said, and the whole class sighed, he started dividing them in two’s and then he reached Andromeda, “Miss Black you’ll be working with Mr Tonks,” “But Sir,” Andromeda protested loudly, but Flitwick waved his hand at her, and she watched a smiling Ted Tonks move over to her seat. She was annoyed, but she didn’t show any emotion on her face, she wore a mask of indifference. “Hi, this should be fun!” He smiled, and she growled on the inside, “I doubt that.” She answered through her gritted teeth. They were getting started after a brief introduction of the spell by Flitwick. Andromeda got it quickly and water came flowing out of the tip of her wand into the basin gracefully, Flitwick clapped his hands together joyful, “Very good, another 5 points to Slytherin, Miss Black!” Ted however seemed to have more trouble with mastering the charm, and Andromeda rolled her eyes, how typical. She showed him lazily a few times how to produce it whilst he happily chatted to her about everything, Andromeda was as uninterested as could be, but it didn’t bother Tonks. He talked anyways. Andromeda crossed her arms and looked dourly at the opposite side of the room at Hailey having fun with Roxy. That’s when a spout of water hit her in the face and soaked her thoroughly, Ted started apologising profusely, the rest of the class watched them in suspense, Andromeda looked him dead in the eye, “Stupid little mudblood!” the words came involuntarily flowing out of her mouth in a fit of rage and everything went quiet. Flitwick didn’t know how to react and simply stood stunned, but the Hufflepuff students gained their speech quicker than him and the insults came raining over Andromeda who had stood fixed. She didn’t bat an eye and turned on her heels and left the classroom alone. Andromeda reprimanded herself as she hurried through the corridors. She had never called anyone a mudblood before. Sure, she had spouted insults but never that forbidden word, never to their face. She hated Ted Tonks, and his stupid ways for testing her patience. She was sure Flitwick by now would have removed all the points she had gained Slytherin during the lesson, and she hit her head against the stone wall. Before realising how stupid that must look and hurried out of the castle. Andromeda was already by the Black lake when another person caught up with her, “Andromeda wait!” She didn’t turn but her eyes snapped open, what in the name of merlin was Ted Tonks doing running after her. What would people think? “Hey, you!” He grabbed her by the arm forcing her to turn around and look at him, “What?” Andromeda hissed at him, but he wasn’t frightened by her like everyone else, he looked ridiculously calm, “What happened back there?” Ted asked, not angry but disappointed, “Why would I have to explain myself to you?” Andromeda asked trying to find a way of escaping him, “Because you called me a mudblood that’s why!” Ted let go of her arm gently but looked at her sharply. “Why?” “Because you are.” Andromeda retorted she’d rather talk to him as little as possible, “I don’t believe you.” He said, “You have never uttered something that vile, why?” “You’re annoying and frustrating, and I lost it. I didn’t mean to say that, it was a slip of the tongue.” Andromeda didn’t look him in the eye, she hated having to confess her failure to him. “Now, would you let me go!?” She tried to push her way past Ted, but he stopped her, “But why do you think I’m annoying? Because I’m a muggleborn? Or what?” “No, well yes.” Andromeda sighed, “You smile too much, you’re always happy and you talk enough to drive anyone insane,” Andromeda muttered, and Ted smiled defiantly, “Well maybe I like talking to you.” Andromeda looked at him with an odd expression but didn’t say anything, “I don’t know what it is about you, but there’s something that makes me want to get to know you.” Ted continued, looking sheepishly at her from under his fringe. Andromeda still didn’t say anything, she just looked at him with widened eyes. Was this the boy she’d just called a mudblood? It was very confusing, he should be angry with her, not wanting to make friends with her. “I like you a lot, Andromeda.” He said and shoved his hands in his pockets, as he carefully eyed her waiting for her reaction. “But… I have been nothing but mean towards you,” She finally said frowning, and he beamed, “I know, but at the same time I can’t help but being intrigued by you. It feels as though there’s more to you than you let on,” Ted replied with a shrug, “I just called you a m-mudblood.” She stuttered nervously, for once the great Andromeda Black were discomposed, “Yeah, but you admitted you hadn’t meant to say that, and I know about your family. I understand if some prejudice exists, and that some sort of cultural clash is bound to happen…” He still smiled softly and eyed her with such warmth that she had to look away for a second, feeling heat rise to her cheeks. “Can’t we at least be friends?” Ted asked her when she hadn’t said anything for a few minutes, Andromeda braced herself and looked him in the eye again, “No we can’t,” Andromeda bit but then she paused, “and what do you mean by at least?” She asked raising an eyebrow in confusion, Ted smiled a cheeky smile and bowed down and kissed her cheek gently, her eyes widened, but he straightened himself to his full height again, “My next class starts now, bye!” and he were off before she had time to react. Andromeda stood under the tree, holding a hand to her cheek where he had kissed her and felt an unusual flutter in her stomach. But once she realised what he had taken the liberty to do she scowled again. “Damn you, Ted Tonks!” she muttered angrily under her breath before she stalked of to her next class – Defence against the dark arts.
Chapter 2
Andromeda walked into the Defence against the dark arts classroom and sat down next to Roxanne, Abigail and Hailey were seated together. Professor Avery were happy to see them as usual and begun the lesson with eagerness. “Where did you stalk of to?” Roxy whispered, Andromeda looked at her with her façade firm in place, “I took a breath of fresh air.” “I think you were right to call that Tonks boy what you did.” Roxy continued even though Andromeda had turned towards Professor Avery to hear what he said. “Mmph,” Andromeda hardly listened and bit the end of her quill thoughtfully, and then opened her ink-well, before dipping her quill in the ink as she begun taking notes. Roxanne looked a bit annoyed with Andromeda because she hadn’t continued talking about the happening, but then Roxanne took her focus elsewhere. “You have to understand that these non-verbal spells are hard to configure, and only the most skilled witch or wizard will be able to do it at once, it takes a lot of practise!” Professor Avery looked at the class from over his spectacles. A Gryffindor boy known as Andrews raised his hand, “Professor Avery?” “Yes, Mr Andrews?” Professor Avery looked at the boy expectantly, “Cannot we try and produce such a spell now?” “You have to understand, it is a very hard thing indeed,” Professor Avery stretched yet again, “Not all of you will be able to do it today.” “But couldn’t you let one of us, the most skilled in the class, have a go on you now?” Andrews pressed with a sly smile, Professor Avery looked thoughtful for a second, but then nodded, “I suppose we could,” Andrews were about to rise from his seat when… “ Miss Black, would you come up here?” Professor Kettleburn asked but were interrupted again by Andrews who looked irritated, “Why does she get to try? – Is it because she’s pureblood, because she is not as good of a witch as I am a wizard!” Professor Avery looked quite uncomfortable, and Andromeda let out an annoyed sigh. It was no secret that most of the school thought the pureblooded Slytherins were awful at magic and were only grasping to their blood status because of that. In fact, most of them hated the Slytherins, it didn’t matter who. “Eh, I suppose you could,” Professor Avery looked conflicted, “both of you, yes, both, could try on me, Andrews you may begin!” Professor Avery said nervously. Andrews marched up to the front with confidence and threw Andromeda a pitiful look which she brushed off. “Now, concentrate quite hard, focus and try and jinx me.” Professor Avery said, minutes passed in awkward silent anticipation, but nothing happened, Professor Avery gave him a patronising pat on the shoulder, “There, there, my boy, you will get the hang of it soon enough, Miss Black, come to the front.” Andromeda stood up and walked up to him, a little nervous as half of the class wanted her to fail. “Now, concentrate, focus and put all your thought into the jinx you want to produce.” Professor Avery stood ready, Andromeda looked at her professor, “I want to try something else, not a jinx, not on you, may I?” Professor Avery smiled, “But of course, as long as it’s a non-verbal, and obviously not some kind of dark magic.” He laughed, but Andromeda looked a wee bit uncomfortable. “Go on then.” He encouraged, and she focused hard. Andromeda thought about last Christmas, the one where she and Bella had been having so much fun at Hogwarts after persuading their father to let them stay over the holiday, one of her happiest memories ever. A Christmas without anxiety and fights. Then she began to simultaneously think Expecto Patronum. Andromeda lifted her wand and waved it in the air, feeling the happiness sore through her body out into her fingertips, and when she opened her eyes a badger made of light came spouting out of the tip of her wand and she had it running about the room. Everyone on the Gryffindor half who had silently wished for failure, felt their jaws drop. Professor Avery applauded ecstatically, “Bravo I say, bravo my dear child!” Andromeda let the badger disappear before she walked back to her seat and sat down, Roxanne gave her a nudge and smiled, “Truly splendid, Miss Black! A fully bodied Patronus and a non-verbal one too, impressive I dare say, 10 points to Slytherin for spectacular work!” Professor Avery positively beamed. “Thank you, Professor,” Andromeda replied with a confident smile, on the inside though she was sighing of relief that she’d made it. “Do you know why you can so easily produce non-verbal magic? - except of course you’re being a great witch” “I have Alder wood in my wand, a much-preferred wood whilst conjuring non-verbal spells.” Andromeda said matter-of-factly, “Indeed, and why did Andrews fail?” Professor Avery asked, “Because he didn’t have the mental discipline I suppose, and his wand is clearly dogwood, which is quite terrible and reluctant to produce non-verbal spells.” Andromeda threw Andrews a cold stare, he had tried to embarrass her in front of the whole class. “Perfect explanation, Miss Black, very good,” Professor Avery said before turning towards the rest of the class again, “Now, I expect you all to practise this element, and I also want an essay of about four or five inches about non-verbal magic.” Professor Avery said before allowing them to practise with their peers for the rest of the hour. “You are crazy talented, Dromeda!” Roxy whined when she hadn’t been able to conjure anything at all the past fifty minutes. “I don’t know about that.” Andromeda said absentmindedly, “Oh come of it! You are probably the best student at Hogwarts right now, you have O’s in all of your subjects, and doing extra credit.” Roxanne sighed exasperated, “You just have to concentrate, Roxy. You’re not focusing,” Andromeda said kindly, she didn’t like talking about her grades. “That’s it I give up,” Roxanne flung herself down on a chair, “I’ll help you practise someday,” Andromeda encouraged her friend, “I’m sorry to say lessons over, time flies when you have fun, eh?” Professor Avery laughed at himself, and everyone began packing down their things. “Don’t forget about your homework and take time to practice non-verbal spells!” As Andromeda where heading out Professor Avery stopped her with a hand on her shoulder, “You are incredibly talented, Miss Black, I think we can expect great things of you in the future!” He gave her a smile that unsettled her, and she ran off after her friends who were headed for the Great hall. It was finally time for lunch. Andromeda sighed and rubbed her temples, so much had happened since breakfast. Bellatrix, Penelope, and Adrienne were already seated at the Slytherin table when Andromeda, Roxanne, Hailey and Abigail came and sat down with them. Bellatrix drew her arm around Andromeda, “What’s the matter?” Bellatrix whispered, she had sensed something the moment Andromeda had walked in, Andromeda shook her head, “Its nothing.” “I know it’s something, but we can talk about that later if you want to?” “Mm,” Andromeda mumbled. To the rest of the hall, if they took notice of the pair, it must have looked as quite a cold conversation because both Black sisters wore the well mastered cold façade they had been taught and forced to make theirs but everything wasn’t always as it seemed. They were having a quite pleasant lunch after that, considering the morning, when Professor McGonagall saw it fit to interrupt Andromedas lunch. “Miss Black, might I have a word with you?” Professor McGonagall asked stiffly. “Of course, Professor.” Andromeda looked up at the young professor and waited for her to continue, “In my study.” Professor McGonagall said sharply, and Andromeda looked a little confused and excused herself from the table and followed McGonagall to her study. Andromeda were invited to sit down and have a biscuit, she did not relax however, for she had no idea why McGonagall wanted to speak to her, she was a prefect but for Slytherin and McGonagall had nothing to do with that. “I thought I should speak to you about today.” She began looking at Andromeda seriously, “Indeed?” Andromeda asked trying not to sound to nervous, “I just had a chat with Professor Avery. He told me of your great achievement in class today. Non-verbal spells are difficult work indeed.” Andromeda felt bewildered by this, why would McGonagall need to see her privately about that? “I know you are a great witch, Miss Black, in fact I have scarcely seen such a talented witch before. But with such talent comes great responsibility,” Professor McGonagall paused and looked at Andromeda who felt her cheeks heating, “Eh thank you, Professor, you are too kind.” “But you will be greatly sought after, and not all witches and wizards are good. That’s why I wanted to talk to you. There’s a great dark wizard out there who calls himself Lord Voldemort. He’s after great and skilled purebloods to build an army, and he might try and recruit you. Now I don’t want that to happen.” McGonagall paused again, Andromeda was first startled and then made a little angry, “Oh, so you think, that just because I am pureblooded I would join a great dark wizard in his quest of, I assume, blood purity and power?” Andromeda stood up, she was on the verge of losing her temper. “Miss Black, I know you have a good heart, I have seen you interact with your own, but after that outburst today in charms – yes I know about that too, I felt it was important to remind you that blood purity isn’t everything.” “I know that, thank you very much, and if you didn’t keep your head in the sand all the time you would know we aren’t all the same.” Andromeda bit, before turning and leaving without a goodbye. Andromeda was furious now, it was always the same prejudice ways against her and her family, not only the students but also their professors. Well except Professor Slughorn who thought the Blacks were a great trophy on his achievements list. Andromeda passed a couple of first years with her wand ready, and they screamed as she walked past because other student had warned them about the Blacks, and their temper. Andromeda had never hexed anyone of them, but she was sorely tempted at that moment, if everyone thought she was going to be rotten she might as well be. “Oi, Dromeda, how are you? You look positively wild!” Ted Tonks had appeared from the end of the corridor, Andromeda fought the urge to hex him into oblivion, but settled upon not answering him. It didn’t discourage him though, he followed her out on the grounds and down to the boat house. She sat down on a pile of ropes, head in hands, letting out a frustrated cry. Ted put a hand on her back and she startled, having not realised he had walked after her. “Why are you following me?” Andromeda growled, and he smiled, “You were upset, I thought you might need someone to talk to!” “Why would I ever talk you about that sort of thing? – I hardly know you!” “Which is why I thought it might be easier to talk. My lips are sealed, I won’t tell anyone that this conversation took place,” Ted pretended to lock his mouth with a key and threw the make-believe key out in the lake. Andromeda sighed defeated, and Ted slumped down beside her, “I just hate that people judge me as a kind of person.” “Oh, don’t I know what you mean!” Ted grinned, “People tend to look at others to place oneself, which is totally wrong of course. They are quite prejudiced.” “Yes!” Andromeda agreed readily, “I’m so tired of people thinking I am a blood-thirsty monster longing to eat muggleborn babies.” Ted laughed, “You mean you aren’t? – Shame!” “Everyone here think we hate muggleborns because they were granted magical abilities, but, it goes deeper and is more fear and jealousy than anything else, but no one ever bothers to check in with history.” Andromeda ranted on, and Ted listened intently, “What do you mean by jealousy and fear?” “Through history, witches and wizards have been prosecuted and followed by muggles. We were forced into hiding and the world were no longer so much ours anymore. Whilst muggleborns have it all. You can venture were ever you’d like and aren’t seen as a freak, you wouldn’t have to be afraid of being prosecuted because you have that other part as well. We on the other hand, are forced to hide, forced to stay within certain areas. We have been locked up by terrified parents since childhood. The constant fear that some or other of the muggleborns parents will let the secret spill and have us all in danger. It has nothing to do with us believing that you have stolen magic. That’s just stupid.” Andromeda finished by looking at Ted who nodded, “I understand your point. I didn’t know that. It doesn’t make sense in the modern world though.” “I suppose so. But it’s easier for you to say, you aren’t locked up in a mansion every summer,” Andromeda said, and Ted eyed her gently, “Aren’t your parents nice?” “My father is pretty decent, all though he is as un-bothered as one can be. He always turns a blind eye to our mother’s doings. Mother is a psychopath, she hates my guts, Bella’s too for that matter. She is firm and unfair and punishes hard. How are your parents?” Andromeda didn’t know why she bothered asking, but it felt nice talking to Ted. He listened and didn’t judge. “My father is a great teacher, and has taught me lots, my mother is, you know a mother, she cooks, and cleans, is over-protecting and tells me she loves me a million times a day, suffocating me with love.” Ted snickered at the thought of his parents, Andromeda frowned, “I don’t think my mother has ever told me she loved me. I was quite a disappointment, as was Bellatrix. She hoped for boys.” “I feel very sorry for you!” Ted said compassionate. “I’d tell you if I didn’t think you’d hex me, but you are a great person, Dromeda.” “Thanks, I guess.” Andromeda twisted a little uncomfortably, however she turned to face him and only then noticed how close he was to her. She looked down on his lips, blushing as she thought about the kiss on the cheek earlier that day. Andromeda did think Ted were annoying because he awoke feelings in her she could not understand. Ted looked at her with such warmth, and with such empathy, “What’s that?” He said suddenly, lifting a lock of hair by her neck, revealing a big black bruise, her eyes widened, “Its nothing I didn’t deserve. It’s really quite ugly, but you know, as mother put it, you cannot further spoil an already ugly canvas.” Andromeda felt suddenly ill at ease and stared down at her hands again, but Ted lifted her chin, “It doesn’t leave much hope for the rest of us then since you and Bellatrix are considered the most beautiful women at Hogwarts.” Andromeda looked in to the warm hazel eyes that sparkled with joy, and her eyes in-voluntarily dropped to his lips again. Ted saw this and hesitated a moment before leaning in, softly kissing her red lips. Andromeda froze but then she sank into the feeling. It felt so good, and right, and she found herself willing to deepen the kiss, and her hands found themselves in his hair. He pulled away when they were out of breath. “I shouldn’t have done that!” Andromeda whispered panicked, and he looked slightly hurt, “Mother will kill me if she finds out. Shit. Troll-booger doxy shit.” Ted stroke a warm hand over her cold arms, “She doesn’t have to know Dromeda, I won’t write her a letter.” She smiled small at him, “I did kind of like it… felt good to be rebellious for once.” Ted laughed kindly, “I am very glad to be of service whenever Madame would like to be rebellious.” Then he paused, “Does this mean we are friends now? – I understand the whole you cannot be seen with me in public thing, but privately, could we be friends?” Andromeda looked uncertain, if someone found out she was friends with someone of his sort she’d never be let out again. He looked at her in anticipation and she beamed at him, “Do friends usually snog each other senseless in the boat house?” “All the time!” Ted winked. “Then I’d like that very much!” Andromeda laughed, “But we must be off, our fourth period starts now, potions.” “Ah yes, my favourite subject.” Ted said ironically before leaning over to give Andromeda a chaste kiss on the cheek, he smiled wickedly at her before skipping of to class. Andromeda laughed, hardly had she ever seen such a tall grown boy skip.

Chapter 3 Professor Slughorn had a way of being completely useless in a way that were not at all understandable. He praised the students well enough, hardly ever told them off, and collected them as an old lady would porcelain. Professor Slughorn did judge their potions fairly but he couldn’t really teach, and he always instructed them to use their books. Andromeda rolled her eyes after the introduction of how to make the draught of the living dead. Potions had always come easy to her, but then again, she had always known better than to use that stupid book. The instructions were mostly wrong in both numbers and on how to use the ingredients. They were all supposed to work individually, the way of working Andromeda most preferred. She hardly ever made mistakes but if she did, she wanted them to be all her own doing. Hardly had she begun with her potion when a squeal interrupted her trail of thought. Jenny Vanes, a Hufflepuff student, were drooling over Ted Tonks as per usual. Something which annoyed Andromeda a lot more than usual too. Why would that annoying witch stick like a clinging monkey on him, and why was he smiling about it? – They were working together. Urgh. She felt her stomach lurch at the sight. Andromeda decided to try and focus on her potion even with Jenny bawling in front of her. She took the sopophorous bean and then started to squeeze it with her silver dagger to release its juices. Jenny turned to look at her and then whispered something to Ted and laughed. “Eh, Sweetheart, you’re doing it wrong.” Jenny said with laced sweetness. Andromeda felt her blood boil. “I’m perfectly capable of producing this potion all by myself.” Andromeda replied haughty. Jenny laughed, “Suit yourself. Don’t come crying to me when you fail.” She turned back to Ted, “Have you been training a lot for Quidditch lately? – You’re so toned.” She felt his muscle and Andromeda felt her jaw clench, she felt a sharp pain in her index finger, she’d cut herself whilst staring at the scene in front of her. She hissed quietly in pain and brought her finger up to suck on it. Unfortunately, they noticed, “Oh did you cut yourself? – An easy mistake for beginners.” Jenny smiled falsely. Andromeda payed her no heed. At least not verbally. How dare that little half-blood call her, Andromeda Black, a beginner at potions? She sneered at her before returning to her potion making. She poured the water and the African sea salt water into her beaker before leaving it to rest and settle for five minutes. She finished squeezing the juice out of her beans. “You know you’re supposed to use 12 beans not 13? – Some people aren’t that good at instructions. You’re lucky you’re working with me Ted, and not her.” Jenny snorted. Ted only hummed awkwardly. Trying to send an apologetic glance at Andromeda, but she refused to look their way. After five minutes had gone by Andromeda carefully poured the water into her cauldron. She then produced 10 drops essence of wormwood and poured it into the cauldron, with the cauldron at a slight angle. Then she switched angle and poured another ten drops. Andromeda continued with the recipe and then turned seven times anti-clockwise and then once clockwise. Jenny gave her a pitiful smile at this. “Those pureblooded scum just can’t admit that they’re wrong, can they?” Jenny said loudly, attracting the attention of the other students, “Lucky for you,” She looked Andromeda in the eye, “You won’t have to work because you’ll probably marry your cousin as soon as your out of here.” People laughed, but Andromeda had had enough she produced her wand from her robe and pushed Jenny up the wall and pointed her wand to Jenny’s exposed neck. “You repeat that one more time!” Andromeda hissed, “Come on, I dare you!” “Let me go!” Jenny tried to wriggle herself free, but Andromeda had a firm grip. “Not so brave are we now? – Come now, insult me again, insult my family. I dare you. Do it. I will show you what happens to those who insult me or my family.” Andromedas eyes burnt with rage and all the students had backed away. Professor Slughorn had yet to return from his study. “Just because you are untalented and worthless, does not give you the right to say what you want to make yourself feel better, do you hear me?” Andromeda shook her a little, “Miss Black, let go of Miss Vanes this instant!” Professor Slughorn had arrived. Andromeda immediately let go and turned, “See what I mean? This is what inbreeding and pureblood mania...” Jenny didn’t have time to finish her sentence, too late. Andromeda had turned on her heel and punched Jenny right in the nose, blood spluttered everywhere. Professor Slughorn looked quite shocked. But he came around quickly enough and helped stop the bleeding, “Now, now settle girls. Let’s see how your potions went instead,” “Try Andromedas, she didn’t do a thing right, that bloody idiot.” Jenny cried, and Andromeda threw a cold stare at her. Slughorn payed them no heed, and started with some other student’s potions, before second to last checking Jenny’s, “This is I’m afraid a very poor attempt at the potion, better luck next time.” Slughorn said and Jenny looked positively wild with rage. Andromeda sent her a sugar-coated smile. And vengeance was sweet for Slughorn tried Andromedas and took in a short breath, “This is absolutely perfect! I dare say one drop would have us sleeping for a hundred years! Very good, Miss Black! 10 points to Slytherin!” Andromeda smiled sweetly at Jenny who were fuming. “But Professor, she didn’t follow the instructions thoroughly. She probably switched cauldron with someone else!” Jenny protested with her arms crossed, Professor Slughorn scratched his head confused, “Andromeda is an excellent potion brewer, one of the best I have had in a long time. She does not need to cheat. Come, come, settle this fight now.” “You cheated!” Jenny hissed towards Andromeda who smiled falsely, “No, I just used knowledge that’s been in my family for over a thousand years. You see that’s what happens when great wizards and witches marries other of the same kind.” “Andromeda!” Ted looked appalled, “Don’t you dare bring blood-status into this. That’s disgusting. To think yourself above another for having ‘purer’ blood. Shame on you!” Andromeda glanced at him with the cold façade she wore to mask her own feelings. She had meant nothing of the sort, only that her family were full of very talented magicians. “No need to besmirch, Tonks. I know when my presence is unwanted, I might have not cared but I find it beneath me to reply you on that matter.” She turned on her heel, smiled towards Professor Slughorn who were scribbling in his papers distressed, “Good day, Professor!” Andromeda left the classroom. She bumped into Bellatrix who were walking with her classmates towards the stairs, Bellatrix lit up, “Andy, do want to join us? -We’re having a snack!” “I don’t think I could keep it down. I feel a bit sickened.” Andromeda smiled apologetic, and Bellatrix frowned worriedly, “What happened, darling?” “Nothing, no need to worry, I just don’t feel great. Have no appetite… anyways I’ll see you later!” “If you say so,” Bellatrix didn’t look convinced but let Andromeda be for the time being. Andromeda looked around the corridor and decided to flee to the kitchen where she would be alone.

Chapter 4 The house-elves immediately surrounded Andromeda and asked her if she wanted anything and then handed her a bar of chocolate before scurrying off to work again. Andromeda curled up in the sofa hidden by one of the fireplaces and as she bit into the chocolate, she felt tears sting behind her eyelids, “Shame on you” shame on me indeed, she thought miserably. Ted Tonks probably hated her guts now. She should be happy, he would finally leave her to rot alone, but she wasn’t. The sensation of his lips on hers were still fresh in her memory and thus the lump in her throat grew tighter. Someone touched her shoulder and she jumped and dropped her chocolate. Andromeda was met with hazel eyes, gorgeous hazel eyes. She didn’t trust herself to speak lest she cried. “Dromeda,” Ted spoke softly, “What on earth happened back there?” “I’m so sorry,” Andromeda replied her voice not quite carrying her. “I didn’t mean for it to sound so stern, Jenny were the one being mean, not you.” Ted took hold of her hand, and she stared at their entwined hands. “Still, I didn’t mean for it to sound the way it did, I only meant…” She began, “I know, but I were afraid that they would find it weird if I didn’t speak up being, you know, a mudblood.” “Don’t call yourself that Ted.” Andromeda frowned, “Don’t ever call yourself that.” “Hey, I’m fine, what about you now? Been eating chocolate too. I really didn’t mean to hurt you, Dromeda!” He grinned, and she rolled her eyes at him, a bubbly laugh escaping her. “I’m fine, I just, you know…” Andromeda trailed of, “I thought you’d turn to hate me after what Jenny said. She really is more your kind of girl.” Ted sat down beside her, one hand on her arm and another cupping her cheek, “Really Dromeda? – Jenny is mean and overbearing, I think my kind of girl is someone who knows her own mind and has a good heart.” “I’m overbearing too sometimes.” Andromeda replied crossing her arms, “Only in the sweetest ways I’m sure.” Ted laughed, Andromeda smacked him over the head, he rubbed the spot with a wicked grin before leaning forward and placing a lingering kiss on the corner of her mouth, he grinned, “Chocolate.” Andromeda almost blushed and moved her hand up to wipe away the rest of the chocolate, Ted stopped her, “Allow me?” Andromeda hesitated before she nodded, and he kissed her again, more forcefully, with more warmth. Andromeda relished in the feeling and responded to his kisses. Thankfully they were hidden from view or the house-elves might have been alarmed. Ted only stopped the kiss when they were disturbed by a very loud grumble coming from Andromeda’s stomach. Her cheeks went pink, and he stared at her before he burst out laughing, “Are you hungry?” “I can eat later.” Andromeda said annoyed and leant towards him again, but he backed away, “Oh no, we have class again soon, and I will not have you starve because of me.” Andromeda pouted, and he pecked her lips, “I don’t think I have ever seen the great Andromeda Black pout before.” “It’s because I have to wear a façade to keep up the good family name.” Andromeda sighed dramatically. “I like the real you, the façade one tends to insult me a lot more.” Ted said jokingly, and Andromeda frowned, “I do regret calling you that this morning, and I apologise for the drama during potions.” “It’s all forgotten, seeing as I got kissed by the hottest girl in school,” He threw her a cocky smile, and she slapped his arm playfully. “But Ted,” She turned sombre and he turned to look at her, still holding her hand, “We cannot let anyone know about this. You cannot write it down or tell anyone. I’m dead if they knew I was snogging myself senseless with a muggleborn. You wouldn’t be so lucky either.” Ted came closer, pulled a strand of hair out of her face and kissed her forehead, “Our secret, our secrets, will die with me. Don’t fret Dromeda.” “I might have been wrong about you,” Andromeda whispered into the nape of his neck, his arms protectively wrapped around her. She had never felt safer all though she wouldn’t admit that to anyone. He ran his hand over her back, “You have no idea how much that means to me, really.” “I want to stay like this forever, hidden down here, no need to face the others.” Andromeda muttered, “I can’t be bothered with all the fake smiles,” “Much as I would want that, we have class soon.” Ted looked sorry, “But just to be clear. What are we?” “You mean as in us?” Andromeda looked confused, “Yes.” Ted nodded, “Well, were just secret friends who occasionally kisses one another.” Andromeda replied, it would never do for her to fall in love with the boy. It would only mean heartbreak for the both of them. “Oh.” Ted sounded disappointed, “How about that food then? – Before we have to leave for class.” He quickly said to stop an awkward pause from happening. Andromeda looked at her watch and gave a light nod. They sat down and ate in silence in the kitchens until they both were stuffed, “What class do you have now, Dromeda?” Ted finally broke the uncomfortable silence, “Transfiguration.” Andromeda sighed, and he looked at her with a quizzical brow, “I thought you really liked that subject?” “I do, but McGonagall had this chat with me…” Andromeda twisted uncomfortably, “About what?” Ted were determined not to let another conversation die out and leave them in awkward silence. “About me having to decide what is right and wrong, in case Lord Voldemort seeks me out for his army.” Andromeda hardly looked amused, “That’s the guy on the rise that kind of wants all muggleborn dead?” Ted asked, “Yeah…something like that. He isn’t widely known within our close family, but some people are joining him. I’m not. Obviously not. Don’t think he would like me snogging muggleborns.” “Muggleborns?” Ted smirked amused, “Urgh, potato, potata, one muggleborn, specifically Ted Tonks.” Andromeda grinned, and Ted felt at ease once again since she had crushed his hope of being something more than just friends with a benefit – kisses. “Better.” He winked, “Alright, we’ll need code words. Randomly say rope when we are close to each other to signal meeting at Boat house, at given time, and then pear for kitchen.” Andromeda said, and Ted laughed a proper belly laugh. “Okay, my friends will think I’ve lost my mind, but fine.” Andromeda looked at him with a sly smile, “You cannot lose something you didn’t have!” “Cheeky,” Ted snickered, “I hope to get to know you better Andromeda,” “Likewise, it’s nice to have another friend,” She paused, and Ted felt as though she had stabbed him again, “but completely secret. You cannot come and say hi like you did this morning. If something got back to Cissy, she’d blab. All though, Bella should probably not know anything about this either.” Andromeda looked thoughtful, Ted put a hand on her shoulder, “Relax, Dromeda, I may not be as smart as you, nor as talented as you but I do not have a death wish.” Andromeda smiled small, “Thank you for being so understanding.” “Always,” Ted said softly. They looked at each other for another few seconds, “I really have to get to transfiguration class.” Andromeda apologised, “I will see you around sometime, Ted.” “Yeah, I have DADA.” Ted frowned, “I will figure out a way to see you.” “Mm, I think I’d better leave first, get a little ahead, in case someone’s just outside...” Andromeda said, Ted nodded, they stood looking at each other for a short while before he pecked her on the lips, beaming. Andromeda didn’t know what else to say so she just left with a grin from ear to ear. However as soon as she walked out in the corridor she made sure to wear that façade of stone-cold indifference. That's so sweeet! När han kysste bort chokladen! De verkar dock båda två förutse stora problem med att ha en offentlig relation. Känns ändå nu som om de är på väg att lära känna varandra ♥

Chapter 5
The way to Transfiguration class were quite long but she made it just in time. The seat beside Hailey were free so she sat down and placed her things on her desk. Hailey eyed her and then exclaimed, “Andy, your lips are swollen!” Andromeda brought a self-conscious hand to her lips, and had she not been so well trained in masking her reactions she would have blushed, “Oh, so?” “Have you been… you know, hanging out in the brooms closet?” Hailey suggested grinning madly, “No, I have been by myself.” Andromeda gave her an annoyed look. “Really? – Because I haven’t seen Evan around since Potions.” Hailey eyed her reaction carefully, “Euw, Hailey, he’s my cousin!” Andromeda hissed and made a disgusted face, “Well, it’s your family,” Hailey shrugged her shoulders, “For real, I am this close,” Andromeda showed the span between her fingers, “to hexing you into oblivion. I cannot believe you would take Jenny Vanes on that one.” “No. Not like that, I just thought, you know. Evan’s nice,” “Gross.” Andromeda said determined not to talk anymore about her cousin in that manner. Hailey finally got the hint of Andromedas irritation and preferred not to be in the receiving end of her wand and therefore dropped the subject. Professor McGonagall arrived on the dot to the lesson, sweeping past the students with determined footsteps. “Good afternoon, Class!” The young professor said, “Good afternoon, Professor McGonagall!” The class replied in unison. “Today we are going to talk about Metamorphmaguses,” Professor McGonagall turned to the class again after writing the word on the board. Everyone seemed slightly tired and quiet. “Does anyone know what a metamorphmagus is?” Professor McGonagall asked, clearly annoyed that the class seemed so uninterested. Andromeda weren’t going to answer at first, didn’t always want to be a know-it-all, but no one raised their hand and therefore she felt compelled to show some interest. “Miss Black?” Professor McGonagall nodded towards her, “A metamorphmagus is someone who can change their appearance at will.” Andromeda replied dryly, almost bored. “And could someone like you become that?” “No, it’s not a trained skill, it’s something you’re born as and not made into.” Andromeda was so tired of this whole day, and she tried to oppress the fact that her stomach did flutter at the thought of Ted Tonks lips on hers. “Good, 5 points to Slytherin.” McGonagall turned to the rest of the class again, “Now, does anyone know when the last person whom we knew were a metamorphmagus lived?” A Gryffindor girl known as Molly Prewett raised her hand, Andromeda listened and took notes, but she was the only one it seemed. Some students were scribbling notes to each other and others were biting their liquorice quills pretending to listen. “Miss Prewett?” “The last known metamorphmagus lived in the 16th century, Professor.” Molly pushed back her bright red hair behind her ear, smiling. “Correct, 5 points to Gryffindor.” Professor McGonagall said with a little smile, Andromeda rolled her eyes, Molly were a pureblooded witch as well, but she was a Gryffindor meaning people didn’t care about her blood status, she was not seen as a monster. “Now, class, Metamorphmaguses does not need to register with the ministry, why is that?” McGonagall scanned the classroom, “You might have an idea, Miss Greengrass?” Hailey glanced at Andromeda for help, but Andromeda only shook her head signalling that she wouldn’t help her. “Eh, because they were born and not made? – Also, I think it would be hard to actually keep track of them since they could look like anyone.” “Indeed,” McGonagall looked pleased. A boy known as Adam Wood raised his hand, “Mr. Wood?” “I have heard that Metamorphmaguses are dangerous to the society, and that if someone is born they should be hidden and not be allowed to be taught magic due to the risk of them endangering the population.” “Yeah, Professor, I heard that too, and besides they are half-breeds, aren’t they? – They should not be allowed to be taught here should anyone be born, right?” A Gryffindor boy, whom Andromeda had no idea who he was, uttered. “I heard that they are power-lusting beasts that are out to kill us all!” Sara managed to squeak out. “That’s utter and complete trollshit.” Andromeda had spat the words before she had time to stop them, and everyone turned towards her. “First of they aren’t half-breeds. They are humans. Secondly, being able to change your appearance at will does not make you evil nor does it automatically give you power thirst. Thirdly it does allow you to change your appearance but strong emotions or big changes can make you change your appearance without your consent thus revealing the person as a metamorphmagus making the getting away with killing people quite hard, besides your wand is still individual and should a person turn bad you can check the latest spells used by the wand and who the wand belongs to.” Andromeda ranted and the whole class just listened in shock. She was using a dangerous tone of voice suggesting she wasn’t playing around. She was dead serious. “You all would have known if you read a book once in a while.” “That’s enough Miss Black.” Professor McGonagall said sternly, “You don’t have to scare half the class to death over an opinionated discussion.” Andromeda would have gaped if it wasn’t so beneath her, but how dare Professor McGonagall claim she was being opinionated, she was sticking to facts. She was defending human rights, and even then, she was at fault. “Can I leave the class, I need to go to the hospital wing?” Andromeda asked with an annoyed tone, “Why?” Professor McGonagall challenged Andromeda with her cold stare. “I feel slightly nauseated.” Andromeda replied sharply and took her things and left the classroom, even though McGonagall had yet to give her permission. Professor McGonagall was left to gape. No one had ever dared to defy her in her classroom during the years she had taught there. Andromeda felt her heart racing and her blood boil, she could not help that she was born a Black, she was proud even, but she was so tired of having to be judged constantly as a bad person. She slumped down on a bench in a deserted corridor. Feeling the anger leaving her, instead she felt overwhelmed and had to blink away tears before they spilt over. It wouldn’t do for a Black to openly cry in a corridor. A hand touched her shoulder, she looked up startled to be met with Professor McGonagall’s softened face. “Miss Black, I didn’t mean to reprimand you. I was at fault. You were perfectly right setting those prejudices straight. But I must ask you to come with me nonetheless, we’re meeting Professor Dumbledore.” Andromeda stood up, feeling her legs shake a little, why would she need to see Professor Dumbledore? - unless they were expelling her from Hogwarts. Anxiety filled her breast and every breath she took burnt in her lungs. Fear was very much what she felt at that moment. Fearing what her mother would do to her when she came home, expelled from Hogwarts, an outcast in the wizarding world, the burning shame she’d bring over the Black family. Fantastiskt bra. Det är så mycket kunskap i denna story, som här om Metamorfmagus. Tycker Andromeda gjorde helt rätt som försvarade deras rättigheter och hon hade bra argument. Undrar vad Dumbledore kan vilja henne? Ser fram emot nästa!
