5. The art of coloring

Next day was a Tuesday and when Lily woke up snow was falling outside the window as a reminder that Christmas was fast approaching. Lily dreaded going home, having to explain to her parents that she was pregnant. How would they react? Would they be angry? Disappointed?

With a sigh Lily shook some locks out of her face, swung her feet over the side of the bed and stood up.

The girls were already awake and were getting ready inside the bathroom. Lily had been snoozing for almost twenty minutes. It seemed like no matter how long she slept, it was never long enough.

With a yawn, Lily joined the others in the bathroom.

“Goo' mo'nin'!” Alice said merrily through a mouth full of toothpaste. She'd always been an early bird.

“Good morning”, Lily replied monotonically, heading for the showers.

“So, who're you bringing to the Christmas ball, Lily?” Kia asked, sitting cross-legged in front of the full body mirror, curling her hair with her wand. “I'm going with James, of course”, she added.

Lily scowled as she stripped down to a towel. “Well, no one has asked me yet, so I doubt I'll be going.”

“Of course you are going!” Mary exclaimed, looking at her through the mirror as she put on her mascara.

Lily shrugged and stepped into the shower, turning on the hot water. “Who're you going with anyway, Mary?” she asked loudly.

“Davey Gudgeon”, Mary answered, giggling.

Lily turned the tap off. “As in, Ravenclaw's Quidditch captain?” she asked, surprised and started shampooing her hair. Davey was for sure amongst the ten hottest guys in Ravenclaw and an excellent Quidditch player. Though no match for James, of course. A small part of her wondered if James would've asked her to the ball if Kia hadn't existed. Or had he, like he had proclaimed, really gotten over her?

“Yes, he asked me yesterday”, Mary said excitedly.

Lily couldn't help but feel jealous of her. Who would want to go to the ball with a pregnant seventeen year old?

Lily sighed, looking down at her stomach. She could already see a little bump. What would she look like when Christmas came around? Would she even fit in a dress?

“Hey, Lily, you better hurry up if you want to have breakfast before classes”, Mary said, snapping her out of her thinking.

“Yeah, thanks”, Lily said, quickly massaging conditioner into her hair and lathering her body with soap, before washing it off.

Wrapping herself up in a towel and her hair up in a towel turban, she stepped out of the shower and started brushing her teeth.

Mary, Kia and Dorcas had already left, but Alice was putting on make-up by the sink.

“Hey, who're you and Dorcas going with?” Lily asked.

“I'm going with Edgar Bones, you know, Amelia's brother, and Dorcas is bringing Frank Longbottom”, Alice said, leaning in towards the mirror.

“Uh-huh”, said Lily. How come everyone had a date except for her?

It became silent for a while and then Alice asked, “When are you planning on telling James?”

“I don't know”, said Lily, putting some mascara on her eyelashes. “I just want to find the right moment I guess...”

“That sounds like an excuse to me”, Alice said, an eyebrow raised as she met Lily's gaze in the mirror and gathered her stuff, heading for the door. “Just take him aside and tell him, get it over with. See you at breakfast.”

Lily sighed as Alice left the bathroom. She was right. She was just making excuses for not telling him.

Lily pulled down her hair and quickly dried it with her wand, before putting it in a pony tail and exiting the bathroom.

She grabbed her school uniform of the chair next to her bed and threw it on. She actually had to enlarge the waistlines of the skirt for it to fit and her breasts were probably twice the size of what they used to be, almost popping out of her bra.
Lily watched her reflection in the full body mirror. You couldn't tell she was pregnant though; to the world it just looked like she'd gained some pounds.

‘Great, now I'm fat too. I guess I'll be going to the ball alone after all’ she thought, grabbed her bag of books and went down to the Great Hall where the girls would be waiting for her.

“There she is!” Dorcas exclaimed as Lily joined them at the Gryffindor table.

“We were afraid you wouldn't make it”, Mary said as she put down her copy of the Daily Prophet.

“But I did, and with a good fifteen minutes to go”, Lily said, blinking.

Next to them sat the Marauders, inclusively Kia. She was sitting in James's lap, the center of attention as usual. They all laughed at something she'd said and James kissed her.

Lily turned away her head, grabbing a blueberry muffin. “I'm done. Come on, we've got Double Potions in ten.” They finished their plates and headed down to the dungeons.

At five minutes to nine, Professor Slughorn opened the door to the classroom and let them inside. Lily and Mary took their usual seats in the front.

Just as the professor was about to close the door, Kia and the others came strolling in.

“Good morning, Professor Slughorn”, Kia greeted sweetly, showing of a row of perfectly white teeth. “Always a pleasure to see you.” She added, before sitting down at the back with James, Sirius, Remus and Peter.

Professor Slughorn chuckled.

“Bootlicker”, Lily muttered under her breath, glancing over at the five.

Slughorn had begun the lesson and was giving directions but Lily wasn't paying attention to any of it.

Had he ever looked at her like that? Maybe it was too much to hope for that he'd dump Kia and be with her instead when he found out they would have a baby. Maybe he really, truly loved Kia. Oh my god, what if they got married and their child would have Kia as a stepmom?

Lily winced at the thought, feeling slightly nausea again.

“How are you feeling?” Mary whispered.

“I'm fine, though you'll have to fill me in on what we're suppose to do”, Lily said subduedly.

Mary pointed to the page in the potions book. ‘Amortentia’ Lily read. Since when were they studying love potions?

She sighed and got up to get the right ingredients. Glancing over at James again, she caught him discretely putting things in Severus cauldron as Sirius distracted him.

Purple bubbles begun to rise from it, coloring Severus face and hair the same color as a plum.

James, Sirius, Peter, Remus and Kia were all doubled over with subdued laughter as Severus tried to avoid the bubbles that seemed to pursue him. Soon his entire form was dyed in purple.

‘How mature. Great father material.’ She thought sarcastically, rolling her eyes. She turned her head to the ingredients cupboard again and as much as she didn't want to, she smiled. Even though she wouldn't ever admit it, she thought it was funny.
